The One I Wish I Knew About Skincare at Age 20

I wish I knew that taking care of my skin is not something that you do when you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s or (heaven forbid) 50s! Maybe it’s because when I was 20 – oh so many moons ago – looking after my skin wasn’t high on my list of priorities.

I remember spending hours in the sun without any protection at all and even worse, lathering myself with baby oil hoping to speed up the tanning process. The only skincare routine I had consisted of cleansing, toning and moisturizing just like everyone else did but with no idea of what ingredients were best for my skin type or what anti-aging ingredients to look for. someone would have told me about all this when I was 20.

I wish someone had told me about using an eye cream, though I’m grateful that I learned the hard way (by looking in the mirror) that puffiness and dark circles aren’t something you should ignore.

If only someone had explained to me how sun exposure can cause wrinkles and other signs of aging; how it causes damage to your skin cells which make them look duller and less radiant. If only someone had explained to me that layering sunscreen underneath my makeup would have protected my skin not just while I was outdoors but throughout the day, even indoors! We all learn by trial and error so it’s probably safe to say that everything happens for a reason. At least now I know better than to spend hours baking in the sun or to sleep with my makeup on.

I would say if you don’t know how to take care of your skin by now, start learning! I’ve learned way more about skincare than I ever needed to know (my medicine cabinet is full of products that I’ll probably never use) but like they say, knowledge is power and taking care of your skin is something that will benefit not just yourself but everyone around you.

In addition to using sun protection, not smoking and drinking lots of water I also use a product to help me keep track of how many times a day I apply SPF. The PhotoPatch from Olay is a wearable technology that helps you protect your skin from harmful rays while enhancing your selfie game! You simply activate the patch by pressing it on your hand or neck and wherever else you need protection (you can attach it to clothing too). Once activated, the patch will change color when exposed to UV light (after 48 hours) so you’ll know exactly how often you’ve reapplied sunscreen throughout the day.

PhotoPatch is available exclusively at Walmart stores and online at . You can learn more about this wearable technology on Olay’s website .
