How Do I Prepare for Outdoor Adventures?

Well, before you go, you need to know a few things. How will you navigate? What if something happens? For these types of questions, it’s best to use the Internet.

You can start by reading up on your vehicle or car maintenance. You should always have a fire extinguisher in your car and it should be kept full at all times. This is a useful tool for a number of reasons: if you’re ever in the woods and there’s a fire going, this could save your life. Other than that, using it gives you confidence because then if something does happen with your car/vehicle, you won’t be as flustered as someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. Just about everything on a car can be fixed with some duct tape and a fire extinguisher.

If you’re going to the outdoors on foot, make sure your shoes are suitable for hiking. Leather or synthetic sole is recommended because it will grip well on rocks and keep your feet from getting wet if you step in water/mud/etc. Also, never go barefoot when walking around in nature! In addition to animals that might hurt you (snakes, etc.) there are also thorns that can seriously injure you if they get stuck in your skin. There are even specific breeds of thorns that cause illness just by being broken open and touching the inside of your skin. You should also never take off your shoes unless you need both hands for something. If you’re going to be crossing a river or any other body of water, take your shoes and socks off before entering the water. Keep the socks because if you lose your way, you can use them as a marker so that people who are looking for you will know which area to search in.

Map reading is one of the most important things to know about when leaving civilization. Although nowadays we live in a world where we’re constantly surrounded by maps and GPS devices, it’s still good to have an understanding of what they mean and how to read them. It may sound silly, but knowing this information could save your life if something were ever to happen out there (which also brings me back to my paragraph). Also, you should have a compass to know where you’re going if you get lost. Make sure the needle doesn’t move when it’s off. If it does, something might be wrong with your compass and you should fix that before going on your trip.

If you’re going camping, build a fire pit. It’s good to have one because animals are afraid of fire so it will keep them away if they come close. If you don’t know how to start a fire, look it up! There are plenty of tutorials online that can help you with this task.
